Marcelino’s Villarreal has picked the right time to hit a rich vein of domestic form as the club brings a seven-match undefeated streak into Sunday’s visit to La Liga rival Real Betis. The Yellow Submarine has struggle for consistency all term but is all of a sudden enjoying its best run of results so far this season, hoping to launch a late run into the top half of La Liga as the finish line moves within sight. Betis, meanwhile, has seen form falter since December and has recorded just four wins thus far in 2024, with only two of those materializing at the Estadio Benito Villamarin.

Los Verdiblancos did earn a valuable 3-1 win over high-flying Athletic Bilbao in their last home outing, though a first-half red card for Nico Williams isn’t something they’ll be able to bank on every game.

Manuel Pellegrini has sparked a boost in results against Villarreal since coming to the Betis helm in 2020, winning three and losing just two of the seven encounters between the clubs since then.

While Villarreal is unbeaten in seven on Spanish shores, the club is coming off the back of a Europa League hammering on Thursday, in which it lost 4-0 away to Marseille.

Needless to say Marcelino’s men will require a mighty turnaround in the home leg to have any chance of extending its European quest, with the reverse fixture set to take place later this week.

Betis, on the other hand, comes into Week 28 sat sixth in La Liga and eight points off Athletic in fifth, with its chances of qualifying for Europe next season hanging in the balance.

A home win over one of its more familiar foes would go a long way in that regard, while Villarreal is hoping to make it four successive league away trips without defeat.
